Attention all geek-nerds: Watch "The Middleman"

There's an en-tire episode of the funniest goddamn sci-fi comedy you've seen on the boobytube since before ... huh. I can't think of a good television sci-fi comedy precedent. "The Middleman" may well be the first of its kind.

Watch the episode here, enjoy the willfully cheesy SFX and set design, and keep an ear peeled for the dialogue:

"He'll cut you down like Satan's gnarly fist."

"That was the best thing ever! The teaching! The learning! The laughter! The bonding! I swept the leg!"

"Her heart will explode like a sausage casing full of weasels."

"Drop the fatty and get over here. Some chickie just went monkeyfudge on her husband. They were taking a camping trip and she attacked him with an RV."
"Driving?"
"Throwing."

The show's nerd pedigree is solid. It's based on an acclaimed comic series, created by a writer who defected from "Lost." It's gaining traction with the ComicCon set, and renowned geek-nerd journal The New York Times gave it a solid review.

I'm apprehensive for this show's long-term prospects, for two reasons. One, I like it. And two, the powers-that-be decided to drop it into the ABC Family ghetto, where the show's target audience is too embarrassed to be seen. God, just blipping past ABC Family makes me feel like a dirty old man in a raincoat. But I got over those awkward feelings, and so should you. Your life will be better for knowing the secret of an energy drink called (stomps foot, raises arms, looks surprised).

Go. Watch. Middleman. Jesus, don't make me use the thumb.

The things you miss when you don't have cable. Or a television. Well, something for my addled old age.

By the way, you need to go read this right now:

As today's snot-nosed young men say, I would totally hit that.

I don't need to watch an episode to know it's good. Your endorsement says it all.

I'll put Stb on the case.

Thanks for the heads-up, downloading some now for the train ride tomorrow.

In a similar vein of willful cheese, I wholeheartedly suggest Garth Marenghi's Darkplace. Imagine Tales from the Darkside crossed with the A-Team and St. Elsewhere. They've absolutely nailed 80's US television production quirks and crappy dialogue. It's insanity. Plus, it features the insidious musical interlude One-Track Lover in one of the episodes.

Indeed! I'm all up in Garth Marenghi. Have you seen the follow-up series with the same actors, "Man to Man with Dean Learner?" It's not nearly as good as "Darkplace," but it has its moments.

Yes, and I'd agree with your assessment. It has its moments. Matt Berry (Sanchez) and Richard Ayoade (Learner) also did a rock opera parody called AD/BC about the inn keeper tells Mary and Joseph to sleep in a manger.

I'll basically check anything out that Matt and Richard appear in-- Snuff Box, The Mighty Boosh, even The IT Crowd (which has its moments but veers dangerously close to US sitcom plot cliches).
